Exercícios para joelhos fortes is a play by Andreas Flourakis (1969), one of the contemporary Greek playwrights who has most stirred up the Greek theater scene and whose work is still little publicized in Portugal.
It is a cruel and sarcastic approach to the violence of labor relations, amplified by the economic crises that shake, time and again, Europe or an idea of Europe.
The motto ‘save yourself if you can’ has become a pivotal point in interpersonal relationships, plagued by the fear of layoffs and prolonged unemployment as the ‘new normality’. In this play, the catharsis of this through black humor and linguistic games; the winner is the one with the strongest knees, i.e. the one who can kneel the longest, thus saving his job and life.
Flourakis shows us a merciless society, where the survival of some involves the exploitation of others, at work, but also at home, within the family itself.
‘Save yourself if you can’, but there is no salvation left.
